I was never into podcasts until last year when a colleague suggested I download Serial during a period of some anticipated mind-numbing jury duty. After the first episode, I, like most of the world, was hooked. But then it ended, and I was thinking, ‘well, now what?’ It turns out, there’s plenty what!
Since I can’t listen to podcasts and work at the same time (heavy ADD issues), I listen when I’m working out, or doing something mundane at home, like folding laundry. You guys, there are some realllllly good podcasts out there! Here are a few of my favorites (not an exhaustive list by any means!):
Social Media Zoom Factor with Pam Moore: okay, so this one is marketing oriented, which is my business. There are actually a couple of other social media and marketing podcasts that I have in my queue, but I really enjoy Pam. She’s easy to listen to and gives solid advice that is easily digested and useful, whether you’re a big fish or a little guppy. She also shares some great downloads on her website.
Women of the Hour with Lena Dunham: this is new to me, and whoa. Listening to this podcast is like having a conversation with your best friend. She hosts women who discuss everything from feminism, love, work, friendship and sex. The subject matter is nothing you wouldn’t expect from Lena Dunham; sometimes edgy, often controversial and always entertaining. I love how uncensored she is and I’m amazed at her comfort level and talent in so many different mediums – go Lena!
The Moth: I can’t list a media channel without including an NPR-based channel, which is my favorite news station and the only thing I listen to in the car. The Moth show is comprised of stories, told live on a stage, without notes, and are always theme-based. Often when I’m listening to a story on The Moth, I find it starts light, there’s humor infused in the telling and I’m usually laughing along with the audience, until the ball drops. And it almost always does as the storyteller drops a bomb, exposes a vulnerability and breaks your heart. Not always, but often. It’s sort of like an oral Humans of New York.
Are there any podcasts that I should download and try? What are you listening to that you love? Let me know in the comments and I’ll check them out!
