We took a short weekend trip to Austin a couple of weeks ago (which was amazing and so fun, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around everything we did so I can share it!), and thought I’d share my travel & packing style and strategies. We are huge believers in ‘carry-on only’, and have done 3 weeks in Europe with only a carry-on. It’s not hard, and with a little planning, can be done!

Packing for a weekend trip with a carry-on is amazingly easy. It’s just a matter of planning your outfits, repeating some things, when necessary, and reaping the rewards. Plus, not having a bunch of choices is quite liberating and helps get you out the door so much faster. The key is having a basic color scheme (always black for me) that everything revolves around.
The layout above is exactly what I wore, brought & packed. I definitely could have done without the dark wash jeans, but I wanted the option. Next time, for a weekend away by air, I would skip them.
I wore the black skinny jeans, white tee shirt, scarf & leather jacket. Besides the booties, which I wore, I brought no other shoes. It wasn’t necessary, and the booties are so comfortable you can walk for miles in them (I have). Also, the weather was pretty mild in Austin during this trip, even though we did have some rain, the temperatures weren’t too bad and I could have put on the hoodie under my jacket if needed.
I always pack a tank top, and the reason is two-fold: if it gets uncomfortably warm, you have something to wear; you can dress it up for the evening under the leather jacket with a scarf or statement necklace, and you can sleep in it.
Toiletries are always a tough issue for me, and I will do another post on that. I typically decant my favorite products into smaller containers and use a gusseted quart size bag, which I think has more cubic space than a Ziploc bag. The backpack hauled my camera, iPad mini and I stuck my crossbody bag in there during the flight. I will sometimes bring a fold up bag in my luggage in case I shop, but there was enough room in the backpack for surprise goods that might have made their way home with me 😉
In terms of the bag, this crossbody has been my traveling purse for years. Considering its’ size, it holds a ton of stuff! There are two zippered compartments on either side – one for my wallet and the other fits my iPad mini, and the middle section has plenty of space for a pack of gum, phone, small camera, passport, whatever – and there is an interior zippered compartment. Plus, it looks beautiful and has aged without a scratch.
